The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) is a governmental institution established by Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973. NECTA is responsible for the administration of all national examinations and assessments in Tanzania. The creation of NECTA followed Tanzania Mainland’s withdrawal from the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in April 1971, a year after Zanzibar’s exit in 1970. Prior to this, from 1968 to 1971, Tanzanian students took foreign secondary school examinations conducted by the East African Syndicate, following an earlier period under the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate.
